ADVENT 2 - Waiting with Joeseph - Matthew
1:18-25 published Dec 21, 2008
08:56
Ever feel like your faith is based on
second hand news, that others seem to have
personal, intimate interaction with God but for
you God seems distant and remote - as far away
as the stars ? Join the kind of waiting that
Joseph had to go through. There is a side of
Advent that cosmic, cataclysmic, and distant. It
turns out that navigating by the stars (like the
wisemen) has a lot to do with knowing the will
of God, and that we need both an intimate and a
distant view of God see him and our selves
correctly.
ADVENT 1 Waiting with
Mary - Luke 1:26-56
published Dec 14,
2008 05:35
What are you
waiting for ? As much as we
try to avoid it, waiting is
a big part of life, so we
might as well get good at
it. Compare waiting in a
check out line to the
waiting of a pregnant woman
who awaits the child she can
feel but not yet see. It
turns out there are two very
different kinds of waiting -
the rushed waiting of our
culture where we feel like
our time is being wasted,
and holy waiting which is
living with hope as we see
the coming to completeness
of what has been promised.
Just as Mary waited for the
fullness of time and the
birth of Jesus, so we can
experience the holy way to
wait this Adent season.
The Nautilus Effect - 1st Timothy 1:15-2:6
published Dec 07, 2008 10:43
Where is real hope found? Strangely
enough, that question is tied to another, very
strange question: What do the following four
things have in common? 1. The mathematical
function for a logrithmic spiral, 2. A slimy,
tentacled thingy from the bottom of the sea, 3.
Your spiritual journey, 4. The first Christmas?
Find out as we take a spiraled journey through
1st Timothy that leads us to the feet of the
king of kings, the Author of Hope!
Count Me In - Hebrews 12:1-2
published Nov 23, 2008 05:19
Do you ever get tired of being good? Do
you ever get tired of trying to be commited to
what is right, or to people who dont seem to
appreciate it? Commitment is not a very sexy
word, not the kind of word that conjures up the
ideas of hope or joy. But it turns out that
living a life committed to God and to others
allows us to experience Real hope in the Real
World. Join us on a mind-bending journey with a
word that connects the challenge of living with
ordinary people with the supernatural work of
Jesus Christ, and the lessons of Hebrews 12:1-2
that are perefect for people who are tired of
trying to do what is right.
Re-gift This! - Matthew 25:14-29 published
Nov 16, 2008 10:04
Why do some people seem to get all the
breaks, while other people always seem to get
the short end of the stick? Is it tacky to
re-gift things you dont really like? Why do
churches always talk about money? Believe it or
not the answers to these questions and many more
are found in the parable of the Talents told by
Jesus in Matthew 25:14 He calls us to meet the
giver of all good gifts.
The 9 to 5 Me - Hebrews 3:1-6

Does your job feel like a dead end? Why is it
that even the best job is boring at times?, How
do you know if you should switch jobs or just
keep plugging away where you are? Whether you
are a student, a stay at home parent, working
with your hands, or sitting at a desk, Hebrews 3

The Samaritans Purse - Luke 10:25-37
published Nov 02, 2008 11:40
Does it matter what you call yourself
as long as you strive to be good and kind to
those around you? Is Christianity about being
good and kind, or about a supernatural encounter
with the living God? It turns out that the
gateway to encountering the supernatural power
of Jesus Christ is found in a very normal
sounding - treating others with common decency.
I am all that - Matthew
23:1-12 published
Oct 19, 2008 09:33
Today we look at
the third stumbling block
that gets in the way of
experiencing real hope - our
desire for prestige. This
sneaky temptation hits us
all in different ways. We
look at ways we grade
outselves and each other as
well as the badges we carry
that show what prestige
means to us. This sermon
concludes with a guide
through the spiritual
discipline known as the
humility prayer
The Perimeter has been breached...
published Oct 12, 2008 10:25
Why do you carry car keys with you? It
turns out they are icons pointing us to what is
wrong in the world and where true hope is found.
And sometimes hope is found in the least
expected places - such as the barren desert
wilderness where a man sat facing the temptor.
But this man was Jesus, and from his ordeal he
teaches us three things we need to know to live
in a world full of insecurity..
The Problem with Madame Blueberry - Luke
12:13-23 Published Oct 04, 2008
09:59
I own a lot of stuff. My closets are
full of stuff, and it effects my spiritual
growth in ways I didnt even realize. Jesus
talked abut the rich fool who needed more space
for his stuff - is that me? There are patterns
of living that draw me closer to God and
patterns of living that draw me away from God.
This week we look at how the ancient discipline
of walking a Labyrinth connects to the spiritual
insights of a talking blueberry to lean how to
live with real hope.
The Lords Prayer 10 - For thine is the
kingdom and the power and the glory forever
Amen. published Sep 28, 2008 06:18
Here's an overview of the flow of the
Lords Prayer that focuses on it's final phrase.
Why is this phrase in the prayer if Jesus didnt
say it? We turn to Psalm 145 to find out - it
turns out these are not words to be lightly
spoken
The Lords Prayer 8 - Lead us not into
temptation published Sep 07, 2008
09:28
Is it God who leads us into Temptation?
What does Jesus mean by this line in the Lord's
Prayer? What is temptation and where does it
come from? We look at James 1:12-17, the scholar
Diogenes Allen, and the Band Casting Crowns to
find answers. We conclude with a way of dealing
with temptations that works - it all turns upon
Jesus...
The Lords Prayer 7 - As we forgive our
debtors published Aug 31,
2008 09:21
Trying to actually forgive someone who
wronged you is no small potatoes. What does it
mean to forgive? How do we do it ? Should we
forgive people who dont say they are sorry?
Jesus shows us the way in the book of Matthew in
general, and in the story of the Prodigal Son in
particular
The Lords Prayer 6 - Forgive us our
trespasses published Aug 24, 2008

when I say the Lord's prayer? Today we actually
find out! And we take a journery through the
world religions and find ourselves standing at
the cross....
The Lords Prayer 5 - Give us this day our
daily bread published Aug 17, 2008
12:06
With this line Jesus creates a prayer
that spans from the holiness of an almighty God
to the earthyness of my kitchen table. Within
this phrase is the gateway to a life of
simplicity and dependance - a life present to
the present rather than our anxious thoughts.
Deuteronmy 8:6-18, James 2:14-17 to find out how
the hungry of the world, the good things of
life, and the love of God come together in this
amazing prayer
The Lords Prayer 4 - Thy
will be done on earth as it
is in heaven published
Aug 10, 2008 12:27
Are the things we
see happening in the world
actually God's will? If not,
why doesnt he do something
about them? What is God's
will for my life? Can we
really know God's will? We
take soundings in the deep
waters of God's word to find
some answers: Ezekiel
33:10-11, John 6:35-39, Luke
22:18-20,41-44, Matthew
5:43-45
The Lords Prayer 3 - Thy Kingdom Come
published Aug 03, 2008 10:49
What does Jesus mean when he says "The
Kingdom of God is at hand", or when he prays
"Thy Kingdom Come?" Has it already come, or is
it to come? Will there be a rapture? What is the
Kingdom of God anyway ? Strangely enough,
abandoned swimming pools and a bombed out church
from world war II give us a clue...
The Lords Prayer 2 - Hallowed be thy name
published Jul 27, 2008 07:37
Why does Jesus include the strange
phrase "Hallowed by thy name" in his prayer?
This phrase turns out to be even wilder than
what first meets the eye. Join us on this
journey into the Holiness of God! We look at the
second line of the Lords Prayer in light of
Psalm 90.
The Lords Prayer 1 - Our father who art in
heaven published Jul 20, 2008
12:01
Is it possible that the Lord's Prayer
is so familar, we have become so comfortable
with it that we have forgotten how powerful and
how dangerous it is? This prayer will change the
way we look at everything. The very first line
of this prayer is a declaration that Jesus is
right and Nietzsche is wrong about the biggest
question of our lives
The Money Pit published
Jun 22, 2008 01:41
Should you feel
guilty about buying that
thing you have been thinking
about - or is material
prosperity a sign of God's
blessing ? How should a
Christian think about Money
? We tend to view our
spiritual life and our
finances as unrelated, but
it turns out they are
surprisingly connected.
Deuteronomy 8:11-18 and 1st
Timothy 6:7-19 put side by
side give us a great
biblical foundation for
understanding money and
wealth
The Prayer of Jabez published Jun
15, 2008 05:01
What are we to make of THE PRAYER OF
JABEZ? Some folks think it has worked magic in
their lives and others think it represents
everything that is wrong with American Religion.
Beneath all the debate lies the prayer itself.
When understood in the context of the full
witness of scripture, it offers us a profound
resource for our prayer life and our journey
with God.
When we beat a friend in hoops or a video game we love to say "Who's your Daddy!" But that phrase takes on a whole meaning when we look at the only person who had the right to say that to the entire human race... but chose instead to stoop down and washed our feet... Today we turn from Prince Caspian to look at John 12:31-50 and the amazing words of Jesus as he faced the toughest substance on earth - hardened hearts. This early summer sermon ends in a most surprising way!
Prince Caspian 3 - The way of Prince Caspian
9 days ago
In the poster for the movie Prince Caspian, why
is he holding both Susan's horn and a sword? What does
it mean to put on the full armor of God? There comes a
time when each of us must take a stand and decide whose
side we are one. The ancient church and Prince Caspian
show us how to stand against the world, the flesh, and
the devil by looking at Ephesians 6:11-18. For a
personal devotional based on this sermon, go to

Prince Caspian 2 - The Secret of the Truffle Hunter
May 18, 2008 2:16 pm
C.S. Lewis told us stories about the world of
Narnia so we could understand how to live in this world.
In Prince Caspian the children come back 1300 years
later to hear people tell them legends... about
themselves! If The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe
offers parallels to the time of Jesus of Nazareth,
Prince Caspian shows us how deal with spirituality and
belief in our time. Join us as we look at 1 Corinthians
15:1-10 and learn from Truffle Hunter the badger how to
live in the ancient future. For a personal devotional on
this topic, go to

Why is it we sometimes feel closer to God in the woods than in a church? Dr. Cornelius gives us the answer as we look at 1st Chronicles 16:31-36. The Journey back to faith part 1. It turns out this world is even wilder than we imagined. For a personal devotional based on this sermon, go to http://www.southridgeworship.com/prince_caspian_1.htm
Reason - within reason ...The relationship between
faith and reason, God's sovereignty and our free-will
in everyday life May 04,
2008 7:42 pm
In our culture it is popular to treat
science and faith like they are opposites - but they
are not. In this fascinating scripture we look at the
way Capihas, Judas, and Mary use reason in different
ways and come to very different conclusions. How can
we have free will if God is in control ? Here is an
image that helps us with this timeless question. John

A river runs through it - Finding Hope in a Broken World

The Ultimate Wedge Issue - John 10:19-33
Are Christians Intolerant? How should a Christian view
politics? Is Jesus the only way to God? If God is love, and Jesus
came for everyone, did he intend his church to be divisive? When we
encounter Jesus, it forces us to choose, and we don't like choosing.
